The Importance of Windows When Soundproofing Your Home

adviceThere are a number of reasons why you may need to soundproof your home. Perhaps you need to block out the noise coming from your neighbours, or maybe you want to be able to use your home theatre without worrying about getting any complaints! Whatever the reasons, your windows are the most important element of any room.

When noise travels in and out of the room it does so mostly through the windows. Many homes simply have single pane windows with a wood frame, which don’t work well when it comes to keeping out noise.

How to Soundproof Your Windows

The single biggest measure you can take when it comes to soundproofing your windows is to fit new ones. Choosing double glazing means you’ll benefit from a large reduction of noise, in many cases by around 50%!

You can also take other measures to help reduce the noise even further, such as purchasing sound deadening drapes. Many hotels make use of these drapes to help block sound entering or leaving the room, and the good news is that they come in a wide range of different styles for the home.

Window plugs also exist. They are simply mats inserted around the window frame and can help to tighten the sound barrier. The downside of this method is that they will block light through the window.

If you can’t afford many new measures then cheap carpeting or bedding hung around the room can help to reduce the amount of sound transmitted – useful if you have a special event happening and need a quick fix.

Green Voice of Great Britain Launched by Melanie Sykes

newsTelevision presenter Melanie Sykes has recently become a spokesman for environmental issues, launching a new competition ‘Green Voice of Great Britain’.

This new campaign seeks to find one person who can be used to represent ordinary people when it comes to the important issues on going green.

The new campaign is being supported by the Energy Saving Trust. The individual who wins the competition will be invited to the Houses of Parliament on 21 October, right in the middle of Energy Saving Week, and they will become the representative of the masses when it comes to saving energy in our homes.

Melanie Sykes said of the campaign that it is important to realise that householders can do their bit to reduce carbon emissions in the UK, as they are responsible for almost half of all emissions.

She also added “We’re looking for people who care about the environment, want to get involved and have their say.”

Reports have also shown that almost all homes can benefit from cheap gas and electricity bills if they take the time to improve installation and install energy efficient double glazing in windows and doors. Such changes can help households to save around £300 every year.

The winner of the green voice competition will hold their position for a year, and Sykes maintains that you don’t have to be an avid environmentalist already living in a green home to enter. You just need to have a desire to make your voice heard.
