A Third of All Households are ‘Too Lazy’ to Switch Their Energy Supplier

When it comes to getting the best prices for our energy bills, most of us have heard that switching suppliers has the potential to save us hundreds every year. And with the internet, comparing various energy suppliers and prices is now easier than ever before.

However, consumer groups have recently reported that the members of society most vulnerable to high energy costs cannot make use of this technology and are losing out. This includes the elderly, who cannot take advantage of the best deals, as well as those who are reluctant to sign up to direct debits.

However, these groups have also reported that even those who are able to compare prices are not doing so, simply because they are lazy or just don’t care.

The research was carried out by Mintel, stating that around a third of households ‘can’t be bothered’ to change. Switching supplier is seen as an inconvenience despite the fact that it will save money down the line.

Of those who have switched suppliers, around a fifth only did so after being approached by an energy company. This means that they may not be benefitting from the best deals.

Despite this apathy when it comes to changing supplier, the research did show that homeowners have been taking more action to make their homes more energy efficient. Many people now recognise the financial and environmental benefits of installing double glazing, and trying to turn off all appliances when they aren’t being used.
